Sunscreen…yes, please take orally!

Summer has officially arrived here in Seattle!  I have been waiting for this day to come!  But guess where I’m sitting…inside!  Haha!!!!  It’s too hot for me out there.  It’s 91 and when it gets past 80, this girl is most likely inside.  (How did I grow up in Los Angeles????)  Anyhow, it got me thinking about my skin and sunscreen.  I came across an article on sunscreen and chemicals and found it very interesting.  So of course I started doing some research about how to protect our skin…naturally!  Eat to nourish…but also eat to protect.  Plants suffer from too much sun exposure as well.  Plants use color as a natural sunscreen.  The more colors we eat, the better protected we will be!  Eat the rainbow~

I have come to find out that lycopene, beta carotene, and antioxidants are the strong supporters, fighters, and protectors here!  And guess what…we can eat them!!!!  Woohooo!  Let’s do this! (my lab partner always said that before doing our lab project…got me pumped up every time!)

  • Tomatoes (cooking them releases even more lycopene)
  • Tomato paste
  • Tomato sauce (healthy ones with not a lot of sugar pleeze!)
  • Broccoli
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Red/Green/Yellow Bell Peppers
  • Grapefruit
  • Watermelon
  • Peaches
  • Dark Chocolate
  • Green Tea
  • Black Tea
  • Salmon
  • Fish Oil Supplements
  • Whole Flax Seeds

These foods will help produce all natural sunscreen!  However, I don’t recommend sitting in the sun for hours with no coverage thinking you’re safe but these foods should help!
